Winnetka Car Accident Claims the Life on One, Injures Several Others

Posted on Jun 07, 2010

A Winnetka car accident involving at least eight vehicles claims the life of an accused shooting suspect and leaves several others injured. The incident took place at approximately 11:45 PM on Sunday evening, May 23, 2010 near Saticoy Street and Mason Street.

According to the Los Angeles Police Department (LAPD), a police helicopter was following a speeding eastbound 1998 Toyota Camry on Saticoy Street when the Toyota ran a red light at Mason Street and was clipped by a pickup truck which was traveling northbound. The force of the impact sent the Toyota into a parked Ford Expedition.

LAPD Sgt. Sean Carmody reported that five other vehicles parked behind the Ford were also pancaked by the force of the collision.

The four suspects riding in the Toyota are believed to have been involved in a shooting incident approximately 20 minutes prior to the accident. One of the suspects, Joel Gomez, 19, of Canoga Park, was killed in the accident. Three other suspects suffered injuries, including one who has been listed in critical condition and one in stable condition. The fourth victim suffered only minor injuries.

The Winnetka auto accident is still under investigation by local authorities. Police have indicated that they believe that the suspects are gang members. There were no other injuries reported.

This is an unfortunate incident and we are thankful that no other victims were injured in the accident.
