April is Distracted Driving Awareness month in California, and state and local law enforcement agencies hope that the increased attention on the subject will prevent injuries caused by distracted driver car accidents in Santa Monica.
A recent article in North County Times discussed the issue and what will be happening this month, including a month-long increase in fines for those disobeying the cell phone ban, signs along the highways warning of the increases, as well as demonstrations at high schools about distracted driving.
According to the California Highway Patrol, 116 fatal distracted driving car accidents occurred in California in 2009, and more than 17,000 others were injured that year. Distracted driving is not limited to cell phone use; it can include eating or drinking in the car, applying make-up, or even playing with the radio. Many such accidents involve young drivers, which is even more reason to talk to your teen about the dangers of distracted driving.
