The trial has begun for the case of Elva Diaz, who allegedly caused the fatal Riverside, California drunk driving accident in 2008 that resulted in the death of Rachel Elliot, according to the Chico Enterprise-Record. The trial started on what would have been Elliot's 22nd birthday.
Rachel Elliot was a college student at the time of the crash, and had even been an influential part of a drinking and driving awareness program in high school called "Every 15 Minutes."
According to the article, Diaz, 31, has been charged with second-degree murder, driving under the influence with a suspended license, and gross vehicular manslaughter. The accident occurred on Knabe Road in Corona, after Diaz crossed over the center line and struck Elliot head on. Diaz faces 15 years in prison if found guilty, and is currently being held in custody on $500,000 bail.
