The CHP cracks down on seatbelt use to prevent car accident injuries.

Posted on Jun 12, 2011

The California Highway Patrol (CHP) is doing its part in tackling the main causes of California car accident injuries by choosing a different cause to focus on each month, according to the North County Times.

This month, the CHP is reminding drivers about seatbelt use by setting up electronic "Click It or Ticket" signs all over the state. Hopefully, these signs will not only remind of the importance of buckling up, but also of the high cost of fines for not using safety restraints.

According to the California Office of Traffic Safety, 639 of the people who died in CA traffic accidents in 2009 were not wearing seatbelts. Tickets for not wearing a seatbelt can cost anywhere from $142 and $159. Ticketing becomes even harsher if a child is the one lacking a seatbelt. The minimum penalty for having an unrestrained child in a vehicle is $445 for the first offense and $1,005 for the second offense - even if the driver is not the kid's parent.
