Sylmar Auto Accident Claims the Life of a Valencia Man

Posted on Sep 26, 2010

A Sylmar auto accident involving a single vehicle claims the life of a man and leaves his wife injured after their car strikes a center median. The incident took place over the busy Labor Day weekend along the Interstate 5 freeway.

According to the California Highway Patrol (CHP), the driver of a 2001 Lincoln LS lost control of the vehicle she was driving and struck a center median in the southbound lanes along I-5. The force of the impact sent the Lincoln across six lanes of traffic before the car came to a stop at the I-5/210 freeway junction.

The driver has been identified as Irena Vilkas, 87, of Valencia. Officials report that Ms. Vilkas sustained minor injuries in the crash. It was unclear as to whether she was sent to the hospital.

Unfortunately, her husband, who was a passenger in the car, lost his life in the singe-vehicle wreck. He has been identified as Eugene Vilkas, 89, also of Valencia.

The fatal Sylmar car accident is still under investigation by local authorities. It was unclear as to what caused Ms. Vilkas to lose control of her vehicle.

This is a terrible tragedy and we would like to extend our thoughts and condolences to the Vilkas’ family and friends during the difficult time.
