The Los Angeles Times reports that the studies have found that California's strict driving laws for 16- and 17-year old drivers may have inadvertently been the cause of an increase of fatal California teen car accidents among 18- and 19-year olds.
The statistics are reflecting that the decrease in the number of deadly car accidents among the younger teens is roughly the same as the increase in deadly car accidents among the older ones.
The Department of Motor Vehicles Research and Development Branch in Sacramento looked at more than 131,000 fatal teen crashes across the country from 1986 to 2007 and found that the there was a 26% reduction in the rate of fatal crashes among 16-year-olds in the states that had more restrictive graduated licensing programs.
But in those same states, the number of accidents among 18-year-olds was 12% higher than in other, more lax states.
