A South El Monte car accident involving a single vehicle claims the life of a woman and leaves another man facing vehicular manslaughter charges. The incident took place at approximately 10:00 PM on Sunday evening, June 20, 2010, at Peck Road and East Rush Street.
According to police, the driver of a 2003 Toyota Corolla lost control of the vehicle and slammed into a pole at Peck Road and East Rush Street. Agueda Quezadas-Gomez, 40, of Monrovia, and her 9-year-old son were passengers in the car at the time of the wreck. Quezadas-Gomez was riding in the front passenger seat.
Quezadas-Gomez lost her life in the crash. According to Los Angeles County Department of Coroner’s spokesperson Ed Winter, she died of multiple traumatic injuries. Fortunately, her son suffered only minor injuries.
The driver has been identified as 49-year-old Roberto Mendieta. Police have indicated that they believe that he was drunk at the time of the accident. Mendieta has been charged with gross vehicular manslaughter and felony drunken driving.
The fatal South El Monte accident is still under investigation by local authorities. Police have yet to indicate what exactly caused Mendieta to crash into the pole.
