A Santa Clarita area car accident involving two vehicles, including a California Highway Patrol car trying to join a police pursuit, sends one woman to a local hospital. The incident took place at approximately 10:00 PM on Monday evening, November 29, 2010, along Interstate 5.
According to officials, a CHP officer was traveling southbound on I-5 in an attempt to join a police pursuit. The patrol car was in the fast lane and traveling at approximately 90 mph when the officer slammed into the back of a GMC sport utility vehicle (SUV).
The victim has been identified as Trina Puri, 31, of Rancho Cucamonga. Rescue crews transported Puri to Henry Mayo Newhall Memorial Hospital where she was treated for serious injuries sustained in the accident. Police believe that her vehicle was traveling about 68 mph at the time of the accident.
Reports indicate that the accident occurred just north of Lyons Avenue. The force of the impact sent Puri’s SUV into the guardrail.
“The officer was responding to requests for an additional unit in pursuit of a fleeing vehicle,” said CHP Officer Chris Cabral.
Rishi Puri, the victim’s husband, was driving at the time of the incident. The couple’s 1-year-old twins were also in the vehicle. They were transported to the hospital, but did not appear to suffer any significant injuries.
This is an unfortunate incident and we wish all the victims a speedy recovery.
