Accidents Reported in Southern California

San Diego Car Accident Leaves Ambulance Driver Dead

A San Diego car accident leaves an ambulance driver dead after he is struck while responding to an earlier wreck. The incident took place at approximately 7:00 AM on Thursday morning, April 1, 2010, on northbound State Route 163.

According to authorities, 24-year-old Esteban Bahena, an emergency medical technician, was laying out flares at the scene of an earlier accident when he was struck by a car. Rescue crews transported Bahena to a nearby hospital where he was pronounced dead approximately 90 minutes later from injuries sustained in the accident.

According to San Diego Fire-Rescue spokesperson Maurice Luque, the unidentified driver was also taken to a nearby hospital to be examined. It was unclear whether the driver suffered any injuries; however, blood was drawn to determine if alcohol played a role in the fatal accident.

It was reported that Bahena was working for a private company when the incident occurred.

The fatal San Diego accident is still under investigation by local authorities. According to reports, the streets may have been wet due to rainy conditions. Dozens of other accidents were reported along local freeways the same morning.
