A San Diego accident involving a bicyclist and a police car ended in the death of a man. The bicycle accident took place at approximately 7:15 AM on Monday morning, November 9, 2009 in University City.
Walter Nichols Freeman, 63, of San Diego, was killed while riding his bicycle when he collided with a police car. According to reports, Freeman was pulling out of a gas station at the corner of Genesee Avenue and Governor Drive when he allegedly made an abrupt turn in front of the patrol car.
According to authorities, Freeman made the turn and was heading south in the bike lane along Genesee Avenue when he apparently crossed a lane and hit the police car approximately 40 feet north of the intersection. Freeman was pronounced dead at the scene.
According to police, the patrol car involved in the incident was responding to another accident. The officer did not have the lights or sirens on at the time of the collision. The officer was not injured in the crash.
The unidentified officer has worked for the Police Department for approximately 18 months in the Northern Division. The department has followed standard operating procedures by placing the officer on paid administrative leave until the conclusion of the incident.
