A San Diego auto accident involving a single vehicle leaves a sailor with severe injuries after his vehicle collides with a guardrail. The incident took place at approximately 2:00 PM on Monday afternoon, July 5, 2010, along Interstate 5.
According to authorities, the driver of a red 1998 Ford Mustang was traveling southbound on I-5 when he crossed three lanes of traffic to reach an on-ramp to Highway 94 and slammed into the guardrail. The force of the impact caused the vehicle to flip over.
The driver has been identified as 18-year-old Sonar Technician 3rd Class Douglas M. Hill. Rescue crews transported Hill to Scripps Mercy Hospital where he was treated for severe leg injuries. Unfortunately, Hill lost both legs as a result of the crash.
A passenger, 19-year-old STG Seaman Joshua Songer, was also taken to the hospital. He was eventually released.
According to CHP Officer Ken Jackman, police believe that Hill may have been speeding at the time of the accident. Jackman reported that witnesses saw Hill racing other cars at the time.
The San Diego car accident is still under investigation by local authorities.
This is a terrible accident and we wish both victims a speedy recovery during this difficult time.
