A Reseda car accident involving two vehicles claims the life of a local grandmother and leaves her grandson hospitalized. The incident took place at approximately 2:00 AM on Sunday morning, July 18, 2010, outside the woman’s home at Strathern Street and Wilbur Avenue.
According to Los Angeles police officer Virgil Castor, Chandrika de Silva, 51, of Reseda, and her husband had just returned home when the incident occurred. The rear of their car was sticking out into the street as her husband got out of the car to open the gate to their home. At that time, Silva got out of the car to attend to her 5-year-old grandson. That is when their vehicle was struck by a Jeep Cherokee.
The force of the impact caused the Prius to become overturned. Silva lost her life and her grandson was ejected from the vehicle. Rescue crews transported the 5-year-old to Children’s Hospital where he was treated for a concussion and other injuries. He is expected to survive.
The driver of the Jeep has been identified as Richard Albert Buitron, 22, a Marine stationed near the Fresno area. According to Sgt. R. Cannon, officials believe that Buitron may have been drunk at the time he slammed into the Prius.
The fatal Reseda accident is still under investigation by local authorities. Buitron has been arrested on suspicion of gross vehicular manslaughter.
This is a terrible accident and we extend our thoughts and condolences to everyone who has been affected by it.
