Accidents Reported in Southern California

Newport Beach Bicycle Accident Leads to Death

A Newport Beach bicycle accident involving a hit-and-run driver and a bicyclist leaves one man dead as the driver drifts out of her lane and hits the bicycle. The incident took place on Wednesday, December 9, 2009, on a busy Newport Beach street.

According to police, Donald Murphy, 49, of Irvine, was riding his bike along Jamboree Road, just north of Ford Road, when he was struck by a car driven by Patricia Ann Izquieta, 37, of Riverside. According to reports, the female driver drifted out of the lane she was traveling in and struck Murphy, who was traveling near the curb.

Rescue workers transported the male bicyclist to Western Medical Center in Santa Ana where he was pronounced dead at approximately 11:55 AM the next day due to injuries sustained in the accident.

According to Sgt. Evan Sailor, as Murphy lay injured on the side of the road, Izquieta continued driving, dragging his bike with her for an unspecified distance.  Police later located Izquieta and arrested and booked her on suspicion of felony hit-and-run.

The fatal Newport Beach hit-and-run accident is still under investigation by local authorities. Police have indicated that they do not believe that alcohol was a contributing factor in the accident.  She successfully posted bail and was released from custody on Thursday.
