Newhall Car Accident Claims the Lives of Four Children and One Adult

Posted on Apr 27, 2010

A Newhall car accident involving three vehicles leaves five people dead, four of them children, and six others injured. The incident took place at approximately 11:55 PM on Sunday evening, April 11, 2010, along Interstate 5 in the Newhall Pass.

According to the California Highway Patrol, the driver of a red Mazda pickup truck lost control of his vehicle on the rain-slicked freeway and rolled over after striking the center divider. That is when a Nissan Altima slammed into the Mazda and was then stuck by a Chevrolet Suburban.

The driver of the Mazda, John Blackburn, 54, of Frazier Park, was pronounced dead from injuries sustained in the accident.

Tragically, four children traveling in the Nissan lost their lives. The driver suffered only minor injuries while another adult passenger was transported to the hospital. She was listed in critical condition.

There were four people in the Chevrolet at the time of the accident, including an infant and a toddler. Fortunately, they only suffered minor injuries.

The fatal Newhall accident, which occurred in wet conditions approximately 25 miles north of Los Angeles, is still under investigation by local authorities. Police have indicated that the wet road conditions may have not been the only contributing factor. They believe that unsafe speed or a mechanical failure may have played a role.

This is a terrible event and our thoughts and condolences go out to all of those who have been affected by this tragedy.
