New Program to Help Low-Income Drivers Buy Auto Insurance

Posted on Oct 15, 2011

In an effort to cut back on the number of uninsured drivers involved in California car accidents, Governor Brown recently signed a law that would give low-income drivers better access to auto insurance.

MarketWatch.com reports that the new law would allow drivers with good driving records the opportunity to purchase policies for under $300 per year. While the $10,000/$20,000/$3,000 policy limits of the new program are under the standard basic liability of $15,000/$30,000/$5,000, it is still better than driving without auto insurance at all, and also meet California's state minimum requirement.

In order for drivers to participate in California's Low Cost Auto Insurance Program, they must have no more than one point on their driving record and be over the age of 19 with three years of driving experience. The car that the driver is insuring can be worth no more than $20,000, and their annual income cannot exceed $27,225 for a single person or $55,875 for a family of four.

The program is expected to start in the near future, and more information can be obtained by calling 866.602.8861 or by visiting www.MyLowCostAuto.com.
