Accidents Reported in Southern California

Men Have Higher Auto Insurance Rates, More Car Accidents

Posted on Apr 18, 2011

According to an analysis performed by OnlineAutoInsurance.com, California auto insurance premiums tend to be higher for men than women.

The analysis looked at a $15,000/$30,000/$10,000 policy for insuring a 2009 Toyota Corolla to men and women separately in nine age brackets, using the same four insurance companies.

The results found that men had higher premiums by roughly 20%, even though all of the drivers in the report were free from accidents or traffic violations.

The main explanation for the higher insurance cost for men could be their contribution to the number of California car accident injuries. According to the U.S. Department of Transportation, men account for 37% more accidents than women. Men also are responsible for more fatal accidents than women, with the rate of involvement in car accidents 196% more for men than women.

Some states do not allow different insurance policy quotes based on gender, including Michigan, Montana, and Pennsylvania.
