The Southern California car accident attorneys at Steinberg Spencer were interested in the Los Angeles Times article that focused on an often-overlooked cause of California car accidents - marijuana use.
According to the article and the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, random roadside checks found that more than 16% of all nighttime drivers were impaired by various legal and illegal drugs, with over half the drivers using marijuana.
The California Highway Patrol blames nearly 1,000 deaths and injuries each year on drivers who are under the influence of drugs. They also found that there was a 55% increase over the past ten years of number of accidents where drugs were the cause of fatal crashes that did not involve alcohol.
These numbers are alarming, especially considering that marijuana use is relatively easier for drivers to hide than alcohol consumption. The lawyers in our office especially want to warn new teen drivers about the dangers of drinking and drug use and driving. Not only is it illegal, it is dangerous and life-threatening.
