Los Angeles County lost five people to fatal California car accident injuries Labor Day weekend, according the Los Angeles Times and the California State Highway Patrol.
One of the deceased lost his life after he was struck on the shoulder of the highway while standing near a car crash that had just occurred.
Other accidents included one involving another fatal pedestrian car accident injury when a man tried to cross the 101 Freeway after crashing his car into a guardrail. When he went to cross the highway for help, he was struck by a 76-year-old driver who sustained no injuries.
The number of traffic-related deaths during Labor Day weekend was much higher this year. There was only one reported fatality during the first 36 hours of the same weekend last year.
There were also 16 more drunk driving arrests this year than last. 227 people were caught on suspicion of driving under the influence compared to 209 arrests last year. The California State Highway Patrol reported that they arrested 1,008 for drinking and driving this year, and 990 last year during Labor Day weekend.
