Are Children Safer Riding With Grandparents than Parents?

Posted on Sep 29, 2011

Dr. Flaura K. Winston headed a study that found children may be safer while riding as passengers in their grandparents' cars versus their parents'.

According to the New York Times, the report looked at data gathered from 11,859 children involved in car accidents from 2003 to 2007. The parents of 1,302 child car accident injury victims were also interviewed. The study suggests that the kids are safer with grandma and grandpa since they may be at half the risk of injury from an accident. The study was also published in the August issue of Pediatrics.

Regardless of whose child you may be transporting in your vehicle, it is imperative to buckle the kids, or have them ride in the correct car or booster seats. Remind children to always face forward and to never attempt to remove their seatbelts while the car is running.
