How safe are large trucks? Has this thought ever crossed your mind as you passed truck after truck on the freeway? The trucking industry wants you to believe one thing about truck safety, but its time you know the truth.
The American Association for Justice (AAJ) created an eye-opening report, “Warning! Safety Violations Ahead: Motor Carrier Companies Keep Unsafe Trucks on U.S. Roads.” According to the AAJ, of the more than 9 million trucks on U.S. roadways, many are “in serious violation of federal safety standards.” The report mentions the following violations that seem to occur:
Overloaded trucks
Unqualified or untrained truckers
Poor maintenance of tires and brakes
Compensation systems that encourage truckers to speed and drive long hours
Are trucking companies cutting corners? Many would suggest that trucking companies are violating safety standards to maximize their profits. AAJ researchers attempted to get to the bottom of truck safety. They analyzed a million lines of data on the U.S. trucking industry. What researchers discovered is unsettling. As of April 2009:
“There were more than 28,000 trucking companies, representing more than 200,000 trucks, operating on U.S. roads with safety violations.”
