Dogs have always been known as man’s best friend—and it is a fitting name. There’s just something that draws people to a cute, playful, and loyal dog with a bubbly personality. But what happens when a dog appears to be meaner than cute, more harmful than playful, and defensive rather than loyal? It happens. Dogs, at one time or another, have bitten the hand that feeds them—or even the hand that just wanted to pet them. The reality is that it is prudent to know which dogs are safe to be around and which ones to avoid.
Of course, the temperance of a dog depends on the quality of its upbringing. If you own a dog, make sure to treat it with love and discipline. The dog should know who the master is. Good ways to solidify this include teaching your dog commands like sit, stay, heel, and come. Obedience is a key factor in a safe dog.
Start a dog off with good habits. Play games that are less aggressive, like fetch. Games like tug-of-war put your hand close to the dog’s mouth and can encourage misbehavior. Also, make sure that a dog can drop a toy on command so that you aren’t required to grab the toy yourself.
Owners of dogs can also take precautions in protecting other people. Socializing your dog can go leaps and bounds. Dogs that aren’t familiar with outside contact can get defensive and lash out, but a personable dog is playful and fun to be around. Also, ensure that your dog’s vaccinations are up to date. This will guard against rabies and other infections, if a dog does get aggressive.
People can always take precautions in avoiding dogs that look like they want to be left alone. Also, never leave children alone with pets. When you come across a dangerous and aggressive-looking dog, know that you should never run away or make loud noises. Simply stand there very still with your arms crossed, and avoid looking the dog in the eyes. Most dogs think it is a challenge to their power and should be avoided.
Even if someone took all the precautions he or she possibly could, he or she cannot control other dog owners and how they raise their pets. Dangerous dogs sometimes attack and leave people to suffer bites and other injuries.
