Children Often Suffer Serious Brain Injuries

Brain injury is unfortunately, a common problem among children. It has been estimated that nearly 100,000 children are admitted to hospitals due to head injuries. A serious brain injury can be life changing and may result in expensive medical bills and ongoing treatment.

For some children, it can take years for the effects of the brain injury to surface. The frontal lobe functions of the brain develop later on during a child’s growth, so if this area of the brain is damaged, it may not be identified until the child is older. Head injury cases are different for children than adults. It is harder to determine the extent of loss of brain function in a child, because there is very little history to compare to. Children who have suffered head injury may be more prone to permanent brain damage. Some studies have suggested that a child’s skull is only about one-eighth as strong as an adult’s. That means that a child is more susceptible to brain injury from a skull fracture or deformation. Children are therefore vulnerable to brain injuries caused by a:
