Don’t Blow It: California Tire Safety

Debris from blown and shredded tires that lie on the roadside tell the stories of many accidents caused by underinflated tires and overloaded vehicles. People get their tires changed periodically when they start wearing down, but not many inspect their tires for air pressure, tread separation, or things.

Maintaining the tires on a car is the safe thing to do to avoid blowouts and flats. Being cautious and inspecting your tires has many other benefits, as well. Good maintenance of tires surprisingly helps with fuel economy, handling of the vehicle, and increases the life of the tires. It also protects the driver and others on the road from the consequences of a blowout.

Finding recommendations for tires is easy. Most weight limits for vehicles and air pressure amounts can be found on the door edge, door post, the inside of the glove box, or inside the trunk lid. These labels contain the information for basic maintenance of the vehicle, also including recommended tire size and the amount of weight that the front and rear axles were designed to carry.

All vehicle tires must be properly inflated. Tire pressure can be defined as the level of air in the tire that allows the vehicle to perform at its ideal capacity. There is a maximum air capacity printed on the side of most tires, but because tires are designed to fit many types of vehicles, the vehicle itself also has a maximum air capacity number that was based on the design of that specific vehicle. Always inspect tires, checking air pressure and making sure the tread is not separating.

When blowouts and flats do happen on the roadway, the speed of the car and number of other vehicles around can make for an incredibly dangerous situation.
