Could Increasing the Length of Big Trucks Cause More California Truck Accidents?

Thousands of truck accidents occur across California every year. In 2008, the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA) reported that there were close to 9,000 California truck accidents, including fatal collisions.

There has been a lot of debate over whether or not trucks should be allowed to become longer and heavier. The Truck Safety Coalition, a truck safety advocacy group comprised of truck crash survivors, states on its website, www.stopbiggertrucks.org, that, “They’re coming: bigger, longer, heavier, deadlier trucks. Unless Congress and state legislatures take action now, these trucks will threaten more American lives and damage more of the streets, bridges, and highways we travel every day.”

The Truck Safety Coalition states that 4 out of 5 Americans oppose longer, heavier trucks. Eighty percent of Americans feel that it will be harder to drive if larger trucks are allowed on the road.

According to the Truck Safety Coalition, truckers also see the dangers in operating bigger trucks. Over 80 percent of truckers believe that trucks with double and triple trailers are not as safe as single-trailer trucks. In fact, some truck drivers are afraid to drive these massive commercial vehicles.

A big truck can lead to a serious Los Angeles, Orange County or Riverside truck accident. Truckers say that they have virtually no control over a third trailer in an emergency. If they have to make a sudden driving maneuver, it can lead to a rollover accident or trailer separation. Another danger associated with bigger rig is that when it turns a corner, the rear of the trailer can whip out into other traffic lanes.

If you have been injured in a truck accident in Riverside County, San Bernardino County, Los Angeles County, Orange County, San Diego County or anywhere else in California, Steinberg & Spencer Injury Lawyers can help you pursue compensation for your injuries.
