Holiday Travel Advice to Keep You and Your Family Safe

For many of us, the holiday season means weeks of parties, festivities and family gatherings. It also means a lot of time spent on the road traveling from destination to destination. As more people take to the roads, it is crucial that you take certain measures to keep you and your family safe.

Check road conditions. Before you head out the door, you need to check the weather conditions. While Southern California does not have as extreme of weather as many other areas around the country, the grapevine and other roads and freeways can pose hazards if there is rain or fog.

Wear your seatbelt. This suggestion may seem like a relatively obvious one, but many people still fail to buckle up and countless lives are lost as a result.

Properly restrain your children. Did you know that any child under 4’9” should ride in a booster seat? Make sure that your child is riding in the appropriate child safety seat during the holidays and throughout the year.

Leave earlier or later. Traffic jams are commonplace on the 5 freeway and other roads throughout Southern California. You can avoid the high travel times by leaving a couple days ahead of schedule or a couple days later. The peak travel times are right before and after the holidays.

Avoid speeding. Even if you are late to your mother’s house for Christmas, avoid the urge to speed. Speeding is a major contributing factor in car accidents.

Never get behind the wheel drunk. Too many people are killed each year in drunk driving accidents. Before you go to any holiday event where alcohol will be served, make sure you designate a driver.
