Aggressive Driving a Factor in Nearly Half of All Fatal Car Accidents

Aggressive driving is a serious problem in Southern California. Drivers are usually in a hurry and with traffic being so unpredictable, motorists tend to exhibit unsafe driving behaviors. A study by the AAA’s Foundation for Traffic Safety confirmed this danger and showed that 56 percent of fatal car accidents are caused by aggressive driving, such as failing to yield, speeding, reckless, careless or erratic driving, failing to follow traffic signals and making improper turns. Aggressive driving is a major concern for motorists and ranks near the top of traffic safety issues in national surveys.

During the study, researchers reviewed several studies and information about car accidents that have occurred over the last few years. Excessive speed appeared to be the number one factor in fatal collisions. The study did not address road rage, but it did provide definitions of aggressive driving. One of the definitions included, “a driving behavior is aggressive if it is deliberate, likely to increase the risk of collision and is motivated by impatience, annoyance, hostility, and/or an attempt to save time.” AAA defined aggressive driving as “any unsafe driving behavior, performed deliberately and with ill intention or disregard for safety.”

Some of the examples of aggressive driving include:

  • Tailgating
  • Weaving in and out of traffic
  • Failing to yield the right of way
  • Not allowing other drivers to pass
  • Driving at excessive speeds
  • Running stop signs or red lights

Car accidents are one of the leading causes of death in the United States. If you or a family member has been injured in a car accident in San Diego, Los Angeles, Orange County, Riverside, Ventura, San Bernardino or other area in California, you may be able to obtain compensation for your injuries. When an auto accident is caused by an aggressive driver or by negligence, you can hold that person accountable.
