Traumatic Brain Injury Can Cause Posttraumatic Seizures

People who have suffered from traumatic brain injury are often at risk of experiencing posttraumatic seizures. According to the Brain Injury Association of America, the risk factors are even greater for people with moderate to severe traumatic brain injury.

When you are injured in an accident and sustain serious head trauma, there are many potential complications. A traumatic brain injury can significantly impact your life and may cause additional problems in the future. Posttraumatic seizures are one of these problems.

A seizure can take place when a temporary electrical imbalance occurs in the brain. Seizures typically include uncontrollable body movements and sensations. Posttraumatic seizures are separated into two different categories- early and late. Early posttraumatic seizures occur within the first week following a traumatic brain injury. When someone experiences a late posttraumatic seizure, the risk of having another one is even higher.

A study was conducted that attempted to identify the risk factors of late posttraumatic seizures following traumatic brain injury. During the study, researchers analyzed the medical records of 647 patients with moderate and severe brain injuries for two years following their injuries. Researchers discovered that 66 of these patients had a late posttraumatic seizure within two years from the injuries. The biggest factor that was linked to these seizures was the amount of direct brain tissue damage. This damage can result from bleeding in the brain or when the skull is penetrated by an object.

If you or someone you love has sustained a serious head injury from an accident, you may be able to hold the person who caused it accountable.
