Studies Continue to Show the Danger of Distracted Driving

California took a big step to reduce the amount of distracted driving accidents when the state enacted the handheld cell phone and texting while driving bans. However, some safety advocates would argue that cell phones and other electronic devices are still posing significant dangers to the public.

There have been numerous studies that have examined the relationship between cell phones and car accidents. Below is a summary of some of the recent studies sponsored by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA):

  • The NHTSA sponsored the 2007 Driver Cell Phone Use observational study and discovered that approximately 6 percent of drivers are using handheld phones at any given time. While the percentage will be lower in California due to the handheld phone ban, there are still some drivers who are breaking the law and texting while driving or failing to use a hands-free cell phone.

  • Another NHTSA study discovered that drivers did not view common cell phone tasks as being risky. Researchers also found that teen drivers tended to engage in various distracting activities. Even more frightening – these teenage drivers felt confident that they could multitask without consequence.

  • The NHTSA sponsored a naturalistic study that was conducted by the Virginia Tech Transportation Institute. During the study, drivers in 100 cars were recorded. Researchers examined the video clips to determine the impact of secondary tasks. They concluded that it only took a few seconds of a distraction for the risk of an accident to increase.
