Multitasking & Driving in California is Hardly Worth the Risk

Maybe Southern California is not unique – maybe there are some drivers across the country who attempt to multitask while behind the wheel. Multitasking and driving do not mix and can lead to deadly California car crashes.

Multitasking is a common behavior that many people seem to exhibit. While multitasking at work or at home may be acceptable, it is never safe when you are driving. According to a recent report by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), drivers do not appear to understand the risks associated with new technologies. They also don’t realize how their behavior can be hazardous.

The NHTSA has categorized driver distractions into three different categories – visual, manual and cognitive. A visual distraction refers to anything that causes the driver to look away from the road. A manual distraction is one in which the driver takes a hand off the wheel. A cognitive distraction occurs when the driver’s mind is focused on a task other than driving.

When a driver multitasks he or she is engaging in one or more of the distractions identified by the NHTSA. Catching up on emails using a smartphone, changing the music on an iPod, typing in an address into GPS or checking voicemail on a cell phone are all examples of multitasking while driving.

The NHTSA is working on a plan to reduce the dangers of distracted driving. It refers to this issue as a “difficult safety problem to address.”

If you have been injured in a Southern California car accident caused by a distracted driver, you may be able to pursue compensation.
