Has the California texting ban been effective? It seems like a lot of people are still texting and driving.

A: There have been different opinions regarding the effectiveness of the texting ban in California and other states.  Recent studies have suggested that the ban might not be as effective as safety advocates had hoped.

A study was done by the Highway Loss Data Institute, which evaluated four states that had enacted a texting ban. California was one of the states included in the research and the findings are surprising.

According to the study, among the four states that were evaluated, three showed an increase in crashes.  California topped the list with an increase of 12 percent (Washington had a 1 percent increase, Minnesota went up 9 percent).

Researchers believe that this phenomenon has to do with the behavior of young drivers.

Texting and driving is one of the most dangerous distractions in which a driver can engage.  Not only does texting take your eyes off the road, it also takes your hands off the wheel and mind off the task of driving.
