What California Motorcycle Law Says (or Doesn’t Say) About Eyewear

Motorcycles just don’t offer their operators the same protection that other vehicles do, which is why biker accidents tend to cause serious injuries.

California has adopted unique laws aimed at protecting motorcyclists. According to the 2010 California Vehicle Code, all motorcyclists must wear a safety helmet. However, the law does not list any specific regulations concerning eyewear.

The California DMV has developed certain standards which all motorcyclists should follow. For instance, the DMV recommends that all motorcyclists wear shatter-resistant face shields. The use of a face shield can help protect your face in the event that you become involved in a motorcycle wreck. The shield can also protect your eyes from wind, debris and flying insects.

Goggles are also commonly used an alternative eye protection. Though, goggles will help protect your eyes, it will do very little to protect your face.
