Tips for New Teen Drivers on Avoiding California Car Accidents

It's something that almost all new teens look forward to and that most parents can never be truly prepared for - getting a driver's license for the first time.

According to the California Department of Motor Vehicles, teens between the ages of 16 and 19 have the highest rate of accident and traffic violations than any other age group in the state. The Southern California teen car accident lawyers at Steinberg & Spencer urge parents and teens to sit down and talk to each other about driving, distractions, and how to avoid accidents.

One way to set expectations for good driving behaviors is to create a contract between parents and teens that establishes rules for safe driving. Parents should then hold their teens accountable for following what is outlined in that document.

Steinberg & Spencer recommends using a California Parent-Teen Driving Contract, which covers everything from the number of passengers allowed in the car to refusing to drive under the influence of drugs and alcohol. It also allows for a place for parents to write down the consequences for violating the contract.

When having the "driving talk" with your teen, it is important to discuss the following:
  • The appropriate curfew based on new driver regulations;
  • How to handle an emergency situation like a car accident or flat tire;
  • Cell phone use while driving, including texting;
  • The importance of teens letting parents know where they are at all times;
  • The number of passengers that are allowed in the car;
  • Removing distractions like loud music, headphones, food, and drinks;
  • Areas to avoid driving at night;
  • The right and wrong times to make stops-for example, no stopping for gas or food after dark, etc.
