The Use of Cell Phones is “Out of Control” in Santa Maria

We see it all the time on the California freeways and streets, drivers using their cell phone devices while behind the wheel. According to the Santa Maria police chief, texting and talking on cell phones while driving is, “out of control!”

It has been approximately two years since the California’s hands-free law went into affect. Many contend that drivers are ignoring the ban and the potential $142 fine that comes along with the infraction. As a matter of fact, Santa Maria police have issued nearly 3,000 citations since the law went into affect.

Police report that many drivers who are talking on their phones and texting will drop their phones when they spot an officer. They are hoping that the officer didn’t see them.

Unfortunately, many experts believe that drivers can become distracted while using their cell phones which could lead to a serious accident. A distracted driver may not be able to properly react to dangers on the roads.
