Southern California Teens and Nighttime Driving

The Southern California roadways are filled with teenage drivers. If you are you a parent of a teenage driver then you share the same anxiety that other California parents have. You are probably also aware of the additional dangers teens face when they drive at night.

A recent study completed by the Texas Transportation Institute highlights that point. The study took a look at fatal crashes involving16 to 19-year-old drivers from 1999 to 2008. The results are staggering.

The study showed that in 2008, there were 4,322 fatalities involving teen drivers between the ages of 16 to 19. Of those fatalities, 2,148 of them took place after the sun went down. That means nearly half of the teen deaths occurred at night.

Many experts believe that many of the fatal crashes involved distracted drivers. Teenage drivers may become distracted by the use of their cell phones, whether it involves making calls, receiving calls and texting.

These results don’t take into the account the amount of teen drivers who become seriously injured in nighttime crashes. A serious Southern California car crash can leave everyone involved facing lifelong complications.
