Southern California Car Accidents and Drug Use

We all recognize the high frequency of fatal Southern California car accidents. Stories of victims losing their lives while navigating our busy streets are common. To make matters worse, it appears that drug use may have contributed to many of those unfortunate fatalities.

Drugs Linked to Fatal Accidents
According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), post-mortem testing results indicate an increased level of drug involvement among fatally injured drivers between 2005 and 2009.

It’s important to note that drug involvement doesn’t necessarily mean that the driver was impaired or that the use of drugs was the cause of the car accident. However, it’s difficult not to see the direct correlation between the two.

"Every driver on the road has a personal responsibility to operate his or her vehicle with full and uncompromised attention on the driving task," said NHTSA Administrator David Strickland. "Today’s report provides a warning signal that too many Americans are driving after having taken drugs, not realizing the potential for putting themselves and others on the highway at risk."
