Santa Monica Child Passenger Deaths

Millions of vehicles hit the Southern California roadways daily. Many of those cars are traveling through Santa Monica and have young children riding in the backseats. Unfortunately, an accident involving a young child, especially if the child is not properly restrained, can be deadly.

It has been reported that car accidents are the leading cause of death for children over the age of twp. In 2008, approximately 1,045 children under the age of 13 lost their lives in car crashes. Nearly 700 of those deaths included children riding in passengers cars.

The good news is that the number of child deaths has dropped by nearly half since 1975. Experts believe that this is a direct result of stricter laws requiring children to be properly secured and the introduction of child seats.

In light of strict laws and convincing data, some parents are still not restraining or adequately restraining their children. In 2008, an estimated 260 children were fatally wounded while unrestrained during an accident.

It is imperative that all parents and caregivers make sure that all children riding with them are properly retrained. An accident can happen at any time and the use of a child seat and seatbelts can be the difference between life and death.
