New Year’s Resolution: Avoid California Car Accidents by Being a Better Driver

Just as you would be devastated if someone you loved was injured in a serious Southern California car accident, other drivers on the road think the same way.

That is why the lawyers at Steinberg Spencer urge California drivers to add “Be a Better Driver” to their list of resolutions this New Years, in hopes of reducing the number of injury accidents or fatal accidents across the state.

One of the best ways to do this is to slow down. Giving yourself extra time to get to your destination could mean you reduce the temptation to speed. Driving at a lower rate of speed can not only ensure that you are obeying the law, but it will also give you more time to stop for unexpected problems on the road—like the car that breaks quickly in front of you, the child that darts out from behind a parked car, or the driver that loses control and ends up in your lane.

It is also important never to tailgate, or drive too closely behind another vehicle. While not all rear-end accidents cause a fatality, they can still cause serious injury to the other driver.

Another way that drivers can avoid car accidents is to never text while driving. Not only does texting and driving cause nearly the same amount of distraction as drinking and driving, it is also the cause of thousands of accidents each year, nationwide. If you really need to be in touch with someone while you are on the road, make a hands-free call or pull over to use your phone.

Also, be on the lookout for pedestrians and cyclists, especially since Southern California weather usually allows for outdoor activity virtually year-round. Pedestrians almost always have the right of way, even if they are not in a marked crosswalk.

For more tips on how you can do your part to be a safe driver, contact the experienced Southern California car accident injury lawyers at Steinberg and Spencer today. You can call them toll-free at 800.989.6385, request a complimentary case evaluation, and also receive a free copy of their book, Seven Biggest Mistakes That Can Ruin Your California Injury Case.
