It’s Bike to Work Week in Southern California

May is National Bike Month and according to the Orange County Transportation Authority (OCTA), it’s also Bike to Work Week from May 17 to May 21.  Although we are already in the middle of the official bike week, and month, for that matter, it’s not too late to get involved in the events that have been planned.

This Friday, May 21, 2010, Will Kempton, CEO of the OCTA, will lead a bike ride that is scheduled to begin at 8:00 AM.  The ride will cover about 3 miles and will start at the Orange Metrolink Station, 194 N. Atchison St., and end at the OCTA headquarters, 550 S. Main St. in Orange.

To find out more about the events planned throughout Orange County for Bike to Work Week, visit the Orange County Transportation Authority’s website.

Orange County Bicycle Facts
The 2005 American Community Survey showed that less than 1 percent of the population in Orange County commutes by bicycle.  Almost 80 percent of Orange County residents commute to work by driving alone.  The OC streets and highways are already at or near maximum capacity.

Currently, there are over 1,000 miles of bikeways throughout Orange County, with another 700 miles in the works.

As always, take the appropriate actions to reduce your chances of being injured in an Orange County bicycle accident. You can read our article, Six Ways to Avoid a California Bicycle Accident, for important safety tips.
