How Effective Are Texting Bans?

Southern California motorists are all too familiar with laws that make it illegal for drivers who text while operating a motorized vehicle. The texting bans, which have been adopted by other states across the nation, were supposed to reduce the amount of car accidents. However, that may not be the case.

Texting Bans Should Boost Safety
Banning texting for those who are operating a vehicle seems like a good safety measure. The new law is designed to keep drivers from performing activities that take their eyes off the road. Since a car accident can happen in a split second, taking your attention off the road to send or read a text can lead to a car accident, causing you or a loved one to suffer a serious injury.

Unfortunately, the effects of the texting ban may not be what lawmakers had expected. According to the Highway Loss Data Institute, texting bans have not reduced crashes at all. As a matter of fact, studies show that crashes have actually increased in many states that have enacted similar texting bans.

The reasons for the increase are unclear, however many lawmakers are scrambling for answers and for ways to help keep you and your family safe.
