Cargo Securement Laws for Truckers & the Impact on California Big Rig Accidents

In 2002, the Federal Motor Safety Administration (FMCSA) published new cargo securement rules that took effect in January 2004. The new rules change the way truckers use cargo securement devices to prevent cargo from shifting and falling from trucks.

The new FMCSA regulations address the use of tiedowns. Each tiedown is required to be attached and secured in such a way that they prevent cargo from becoming loose, unfastening and opening or releasing while the truck is in motion. The regulations require that edge protection is used when a tiedown touches any cargo. This is to keep the tiedowns from possible abrasion or cutting, which can cause unwanted shifting.
